Los textos literarios cumplen distintas funciones además de la estética. Entre estas funciones es posible mencionar el apoyo a otras disciplinas, como la Historia, ya que en la literatura es posible encontrar elementos que contribuyen a reconstruir el pasado de los pueblos.
En la obra literaria se describen las costumbres de los pueblos antiguos, los utensilios que empleaban, sus formas de vida y tradiciones, así como acontecimientos bélicos y acciones que permiten obtener indicios sobre la forma como han evolucionado a lo largo del tiempo.
En las epopeyas es posible encontrar indicios que permiten un acceso alterno a los textos históricos, pues estos relatos recogen la tradición de los pueblos, así como su cosmovisión y la manera como interpretaban los hechos que marcaron su vida. El Poema de Gilgamesh es una epopeya que ha contribuido a conocer aspectos importantes de los pueblos que habitaron la antigua Mesopotamia.

Literary texts fulfill different functions in addition to aesthetics. Among these functions it is possible to mention support for other disciplines, such as History, since in literature it is possible to find elements that contribute to reconstructing the past of peoples.
The literary work describes the customs of ancient peoples, the utensils they used, their ways of life and traditions, as well as war events and actions that allow us to obtain clues about how they have evolved over time.
In the epics it is possible to find clues that allow an alternative access to historical texts, since these stories collect the tradition of the peoples, as well as their worldview and the way in which they interpreted the events that marked their lives. The Poem of Gilgamesh is an epic that has contributed to knowing important aspects of the peoples who inhabited ancient Mesopotamia.
